4 Clever Tips for Building a Great Fire

Dec 08, 2023

Something is enchanting about sitting around a nice, warm fire. It doesn't matter whether you're enjoying a fire with good company or working on building a small fire for a fire pit you can cook on, knowing how to make a fire is crucial. These tips will help you create a fantastic fire that lasts, including what type of wood to put in your firewood supply.

1. Use the Right Wood

Choosing the correct wood for your
firewood supply is essential. Seasoned hardwood is usually preferred because it lasts longer and is easier to catch on fire. You can pick up seasoned hardwood in sticks or logs. If you don't have seasoned firewood, use dry wood. Grabbing sticks from your yard usually won't work. The morning dew gets them wet every morning. Usually, you have to let them dry out for a few days. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, wood burns best with a moisture content under 20%. For more information, feel free to call us and inquire about our firewood.

2. Have a Solid Structure

Before lighting the fire, it's essential to have a good structure. Almost any structure will work with a large, open burn pit. For small fire pits, use a log cabin structure. This involves stacking the wood like the four walls of a log cabin. A pyramid shape or cone shape is the most common structure. This helps everything catch on fire evenly, but it tends to burn quickly.

3. Use Starters

Holding a lighter underneath seasoned firewood to get it to light is not a great idea. Instead, you want to use a firestarter. Avoid using gasoline or lighter fluid. The fumes are toxic. The fire will start so quickly that it can be dangerous for anyone near it. Instead, use a piece of paper, small sticks, or fire starters you can order online. Pieces of thin cardboard will also work well.

4. Ensure Proper Airflow

Fire needs air to continue to burn. One reason why the log cabin fire structure is so popular is that it promotes an even airflow so the entire fire burns evenly. Firewood in the center of a pyramid structure doesn't get the same airflow, which leads to an uneven burn.

Building a fantastic fire is all about suitable wood and the proper structure. You want a firewood supply that is dried out so it burns well. Then, create the log cabin or pyramid structure for a gorgeous fire with a flawless burn. If you're looking for a quality firewood supply, call us at Stonebridge Landscape & Masonry today!
